One day about 5 years ago, I started searching the internet for help on how to learn Japanese.... I stumbled upon Textfugu.
For a while I was quite apprehensive of online learning because no service is free.... right? When I found Textfugu they offered online lessons but with the first batch of lessons for free. Free was a magic word. I began to go through the intro and the first lessons.
As I went through the intro pages they gave suggestions and advice on how to get started. Most of the advice was 'ask yourself why you want to learn', 'make a list of things you like in Japanese', and 'clean off your desk and make an area where you do nothing but study Japanese. No music. No tv. No pictures.'... Well I can't abide or agree with making one lone solitary spot with nothing in it. Along with walls of text, an area with nothing in it is another surefire way to make my brain shut down. I gotta have something fun around me at all times.
Ya that's Mr. Bean.... |
But, as I went through, ignoring the advice I didn't like... I finally came to what seemed like the first concrete step to learning Japanese. Hiragana. They went through the first 5 with text and short videos with pronunciations. What a wonderful spark of excitement! It felt like it took forever to get there.... but I really wasn't liking the text walls, layout, or advice from that site... and the idea of paying them money later on didn't sit well with me either. I decided to try studying hiragana on my own and if I felt comfortable in a month or two I might pay for a subscription...
I never went back to Textfugu...
